Back(-up) to Core Business

Windows Server 2008 brings the successor to ye old NTBackup. The role that can be installed separately includes both a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) as command line tools. This article is a must read before deploying Windows Server 2008 in your environment! The difference between Server Core and Full installations of Windows Server 2008 is Server Core doesn't have a graphical shell, the .Net framework, Powershell or any MMC related stuff. It puts you back at the command line, which is fun and challenging. The big benefit of Server Core is 90% of the commands work on Full Installations as well, which makes it the ultimate scripting and commandline management test platform for the whole of Windows Server 2008. In Server Core the role doesn't add the MMC, but sure adds the command line tool wbadmin.exe This post discusses in great detail how to backup Server Core installations of Windows Server 2008 and is written in a way you can also use in Full installations of Windows Server 2008, effectively making it the must-read page on Windows Backup!
