Calendar delegation

I have a question about an request. We have 2 domains and have imported users from the new domain into our legacy domain as contacts under GAL.
Now I have the situation where a user on the new domain is requesting delegation rights for a user's calendar on our legacy domain. When I try to grant that user delegation rights (it appears as a contact object) I receive an error message stating: "The user cannot be added. Non-local users cannot be given rights to this server"
Does anyone know of a workaround for this issue?
