I noticed a while ago that whenever I turn on my BRAND NEW HP laptop, the battery indicator say something like, 83%. I say to myself, What the heck is that about? This laptop is brand new and the battery was charged to 100% when I used it last.Today, when I turned the laptop on, it said, Plugged in, not charging and the power read 8%.

Hi all,
Laptops Plugged in and not charging
This is a website that goes through alot of stuff in regards to laptops being plugged in and not charging. It talks about the basics and then onto software and hardware potential solutions. It might really be of use to people who have this issue. Fingers crossed it helps you guys
I JUST found a simpler solution....if your battery has not completely drained that is! 1. Shut down computer 2. UNPLUG charger from the wall 3. Reboot with battery ONLY. Some updating may occur if in Dos, but I rebooted normal way. 4. Plug INTO the wall once again. 5. You should see (or at least I DID) the battery start charging once again! Hope this helps some! 4.
I had same exact problem thanks for sharing ...my laptop is finally charging phrases :-)
thanks i was having same issue on my HP laptop. tried your solution work first time. Thanks again
I really wish I could do this but my computer has never booted up without a battery. My new battery at this moment is not charging. Does anyone have any suggestions.

I have got a Toshiba satellite laptop . I've a Battery care software ; it says charging but is not actually charging , it only charges for a few seconds and then stops .I am using a new battery and have tried your solution but still doesn't charge
it's been 15 months since you typed this but wth. I tried this - insofar and I can even gauge what you're tlaking about - but it didn't work. Laptop not powering up - still not powering up. Take out the battery, plug in the charger, still doesn't power up.
"then open youre user" - open your user? you lost me here.

OMG. Thank you soooo much, I thought my laptop was just fucked at 0%, AND would eventually never turn on again once the battery was completely sucked of life. Your plan sounded so half-baked and stupid when i read it, but alas, EUREKA!
Thank you Very Much.... THis saved me a lot... Which in Indian Rupees / Economy is a lot....
Thanks Again.... Rajkumar from Chennai, India
i had the same problem on my HP. Tried your suggestion and it worked right away! Thanks.

thankyou, i was starting to get worried cause my laptops new and i thought i broke it thankyou so much
wanted to make sure I followed you correctly cause it didn't work and not 1005 sure what you wrote so let me try to rephrase it.
1. with laptop off and battery in, close laptop, take out battery and connect the ac adapter
2. Boot up OS
3. Close Laptop
4. Disconnect AC Adapter and put the battery back in
5. Connect AC adapter and then open up laptop
Is this correct?
what if u have a inspiron 1525 running windows vista and when u take out the charger it shuts down completely?
If you unplug the battery, the laptop turns off, though. /:(
that really works1 i have a Gateway MD2614u n it worked. thanks so much!
muguyzz, mad props to you!! It worked for me too on an HP 6735s.
wow cant believe that worked, nice one dude. thought mu charger was broke, or worse my laptop. sweet
what if you remove the battery and the computer won't boot up? now what?
That's pretty awesome, I can't believe it worked. Thanks, brother!
Thanks, your a lifesaver! To be honest, it really sounded like you had made this up but it worked when I tried it! Thanks for the info bud!
Great find/fix to this problem! The description here may be a bit confusing to some, allow me to clarify. I was able to alleviate this same issue by performing the following:
01. Turn off laptop.
02. Unplug AC power.
03. Remove battery.
04. Replace AC power.
05. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot.
06. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down.
07. Unplug AC power.
08. Replace battery.
09. Replace AC power.
10. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal.
Cheers!
I forgot to also mention that I closed the lid on the laptop betwen shutdowns and power cord/battery removal/replacements.
The laptop this was happening on was my Alienware M17x, first time running the machine on battery power for an extended period of time this happened. I hope this isn't a repeating event...
Arrrrggghhhh it worked for everyone else why didn't it work for me?? :(
I've tried this 3 times and it still doesn't work,it still says (plugged in,not charging). So should I buy a new battery or a new charger??
WOW!!! I can't believe that worked!!!! Thank you so much!!!! It worked on my 8 month old Gateway MD2419u.
i had the same problem on a cq61... it was sitting at 2% battery for 2 days saying plugged in not charging.. here is was resolved it for my: powered down laptop and unplugged it. removed battery held power button for one minute installed battery plugged in ac and powered it back on
Worked like a champ
After replacing AC power in step 4, my laptop would not turn on. Any ideas? I had to just put the battery back and turn it back on, and still have same problem.
Wow. Followed slampig72 instructions and it worked. Simple fix and thanks.
worked for me thanks very much
Slampig74's recommendation worked for me as well. I have an HP Pavilion that is only 1 1/2 years old. My laptop battery is now charging as it should be. Thanks so much for this easy-to-follow, effective solution!
Cheers!
slampig72(3) Thank you so much for your help..It's quite the sequence to follow but it did work and now I'll no where come to when I have the same problem I appreciate your help! :)
Thank you so much it worked. I have had this problem for like 3 days and couldont figur out why it was doing this. Thanks a million times......
Forgot to mention I have a Dell Inspirion 1525.
i just did this and it worked, so this is what i did. booted computer with power cord plugged in and battery installed. closed computer and turned it over and removed battery. turned it back over and opened laptop. your login screen (user) should come back. log back in. then close again. turn over, unplug charger, reinstall battery, plug charger back in, turn over and open and boot normally. when it booted i watched the charge indicater. it started moving and said the battery was charging. this is a toshiba running windows 7. hope this helps
worked great !st time i used it TY so much!

Thank you Thank you Thank you.. This did the trick.. I have purchased a new battery had things replaced and I had to fix it with your help.. Think I will ask for my money back. I spent 150.00.
It worked for me!! I have a 2 month old Gateway NV79C 48u which I bought new, not refurbished. Couldn't understand why anything would go bad that quickly. This is my work PC and I can't afford the time it would take to send it in to Gateway to be checked.
This happened one night I was working on the couch and ran it from the battery down to 7%. I plugged it back in and left it on all night because I was uploading a video to youtube. The next morning I looked at it and it had not charged up. I removed the battery and put it back in while running and it did nothing. I turned it off to see if it would charge while turned off but the charging light did not light up. I tried this: and it worked, (up to 61% as I speak and still charging!)
01. Turn off laptop. 02. Unplug AC power. 03. Remove battery. 04. Replace AC power. 05. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. 06. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down. 07. Unplug AC power. 08. Replace battery. 09. Replace AC power. 10. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal.
Did you resolve this? I tried the steps above and it does not work, Dell 1525 too.
nope, 1) Shutdown System. 2) Unplug Power. 3) Remove Battery. 4) Plug in Power. 5) Startup and Log on. 6) Shutdown System. 7) Unplug Power. 8) Put Battery Back in. 9) Plug in Power. 10) Reboot and Log On. 11) Problem Solved!
Be Sure you followed the EXACT proceedure I listed above. NEXT, try going into Control Panel > System > System Then Device Manager. Uninstall the ACPI for the Battery, when you refresh for hardware changes it will re install it. This will fix it if it is a corrupt ACPI driver. (But the above worked fine for me. I had already tried the uninstall with no luck when I saw MuGuyzz post which saved me arse.
1) Shutdown System 2) Unplug Power 3) Remove Battery 4) Plug in Power 5) Startup and Log on 6) Shutdown System 7) Unplug Power 8) Put Battery Back in 9) Plug in Power 10) Reboot and Log On 11) Problem Solved 12) Works With Windows 7 Home Premium As Well
Credits to Muguyzz, I am a certified windows C++ Developer and had to learn this from you man. Thanks!
Yes you are absoultly right i got smilar problem at my laptop which i had by my uncle about 5 month ago brand new pakardbell laptop and recently the battary shows me that 20% charge avilable(plug in,not charging). From that point the problem facing taht when i try to unplug the battary during that time what happen is laptop goes shutdown.
Although,as i mentioned earlier that within 20% caharged which was shown by the laptop battary icon. Therefore, when i try whthout charger to turn on it won't work to me .
So please if any one more expert about it please let us know how to fix this problem. So that we can escape from serious issues in our contemporay life .

I tried it and it worked. Thanks muguyzz(48)
i tried what u said but still no sign of charging (14 % available plugged in not Charging) mine is Toshiba A300 its just 14 months plz suggest
thank you so much. i didn't think this would actually work. thankfully it worked right away.
"thanks so much it worked!!!"
dear, this action was not useful in my case, pls help me out into this IF u have any other solution, as d battery of my laptop shows sometimes 0% available(plugged in, not charging) or 3% available(plugged in, not charging). waiting for ur positive reply. Thanx, Winkle
Hi, I tried ur abovesaid options for my battery charging problem but that didn't work it out. As the same problem as of above user (danton). pls suggest some more options for that problem. Thanks Winkle
Were you at 0% available when you tried this. If not, then if you are already at 0% available, should this still work. Because I tried it and it didn't work. But that might be because whenever I took out the battery, it turned off on it's own, even when you didn't say to turn it off. Whereas, if I had charge still available, it wouldn't have turned off whenever I took out the charger.
Awesome , simply awesome .... followed your directions and BAM, battery is charging right up, I was pulling my hair out tring to figure out if charger was faulty or my old Dell Inspirion 5100 battery finally wouldnt accept a charge anymore. Thanks now im back in business
Thanks so much! Your solution worked right away. I was so worried and thought I had to get my motherboard, charger or battery changed. Thanks again! Anyone knows what causes this problem though?
hi, i have tried this out 5 times and my battery is still not charging. please help as i don't want to have to buy a new battery thanks
That was excellent !It worked just like you said it would ,thank you !

I need serious help! i just bought a brand new battery 12 cell from dell and it said that my battery could not be identified and therefore would not charge. But i had 58% battery life and it got used in about an hour and when it was unde 10% reamainig i realized i had to update the bios for my battery to work, and when i boot up windows 7 on it, it says plugged in not charging (none of the below or above solutions have worked!)

Hope this may help some of you.

My laptop won't start if the battery is unplugged.
man .. I love you .. you saved my 120$ of battery .. this works .hats off..
you're a genius! i'm quite the computer idiot and this worked for me (hp laptop and running on win7). only difference is that after step 5, my system still couldn't recognise the battery so i enabled the microsoft acpi function again. many thanks!!!
I had this problem as soon as I upgraded my Gateway Laptop to Windows 7. This solution WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks.
This worked for me as well.
Hi all,
I got the same problem (that is now solved): "29% available (plugged in, not charging)" I have a : HP Pavilion dv677 (5 months old) Windows Vista Home Premium I shut down the PC, removed the battery for a few minutes, put it back, restarted the laptop. And everything seems fine now : at least it indicates "Fully charged 100%" , but I don't know how often it's going to happen again....
i have a dell xps m1530 and they said i should reinstall vista (wtf o.O)
Tried this but battery is 0% full not charging and the Dell Bios flash utility won't work with less than 10% battery (even when running on AC power).
I had same problem and tried most fixes listed below. Finally, from Dell support, I tried disconnect both power cord and battery. Then, hold the on/off button down for 15 seconds. Finally reattached battery and cord and it began to recharge. Good luck everyone.
Thank you....I went thru all of those other suggestions....Finally I tried your's. Seemed tooooo simple. PERFECT.........Thanks Again..luv ya for the post
I had the same issue and i thought that it was my puppy and kitty's fault for chewing the charger to the point where i had to tape it...[-_-]...It was a while that my laptop was only runing while connected and if disconnected it will turn off. What I did is shut it down, unplugged it, took off the battery and cleaned it, specially the little teeth and put the battery back on and plug it in and turn it on. Boila...It worked...was so happy it was charging again, there was no more "pligged in, not charging" it was plugged in; charging! So try that and see if it works for you too!if not there might be a problem with your battery not your charger. Good Luck!
I had the same problem - checked with another adapter, the problem was not there. Got my adapter changed and it works fine.
At times there is an issue with the capacitor in the adapter hence the issue.
Here is my case. The problem started yesterday and my laptop is about 4 months old. I run a Dell 1525 w/ windows vista. I have tried the following that were fruitless in my case:
1. Flashed BIOS to the latest update
2. Unplugged the Laptop w/o the adapter then plugged it in and turn it on (this did work for about 2hrs, but it has beared no result since)
3. Put Battery in fridge in hopes of it only being a thermal problem
4. Ran both "Google Doctor" and "Spybot: Search and Destroy"
5. Unplugging and plugging in the battery and ac adapter in various orders and manner.
6. Used Father's Ac adapter (he also owns a Dell w/ the same 65w charger)
I also have that issue, I went on every forum and tried everything that was suggested. nothing worked. Except my computer originally came with a 60 watt AC adapter. I plugged in a 90 watt adapter and that solved the problem. Apparently with Vista being such a high power usage operating system and lots of programs running in the background I needed a higher watt adapter to keep up with the power and battery charger. Hope this helps. And for those users who purchase Dell when building your own system and it comes to upgrading your AC Adapter, Do it otherwise buying a separate one will cost you more than a ten dollar upgrade
hello, i'm korean. now because i am living in Toronto, i had to buy a lap top here. i bought sony vaio. at first, my battery was charging. but after i used a battery a little, my battery is not charging now, even though connecting an adaptor. so i have found all of the korean web site. but there were nothing about that problem. fortunenately, i found solution here!! thanks, guys. have a good time.^^
Mine is also a SONY VAIO. I had the same problems as listed on this page. There is something called the BATTERY CARE FUNCTION (is it part of Vista or Sony's?) I had enabled the Battery Care Function. Now I disabled it. Now it is charging.
on my Dell E6500. i found that fn+F2 turns battery charging on and off.
I have an Acer Aspire 5720 and have had it for about 2 years. All of a sudden when I unplug the laptop from the AC powerplug it shutsdown. I plugged it in again and noticed that the battery is on 0%. However it is telling me that it is being charged but stays on 0%. Tried most things suggested here and nothing has solved it. What shall I do?
I had a Dell Inspiron 1525 not charging. It turned out to be a small inexpensive part that was only $39.99 to fix it yourself. I didn't wear to take apart my whole laptop myself just in case. I mailed it to these guys and they had it fixed really quick for $99. They have an article that will help you figure out what the problem is too. I've tried all suggested solutions non worked.... :( Finally I fixed it by accident..When I decided to buy a new charger...I looked at the Adapter connector (The head)...I've noticed that the inside pin is bended...So I straighten it up...and finally its back charging.
And that its it.....hopefully it will work for some of you guys.
Here is the solution to Plugged in not charging, found in the dell solution area.
AC adapter not recognized or recognized but not charging in Windows * Turn off the PC * Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery * Hold the power button for 30 seconds * Reinsert the battery and plug in the AC adapter * Restart the PC and press F2 to enter the BIOS. The watts are listed at 193 * Disconnect/reconnect the AC adapter. The watts will now be listed at 240 * Exit the Bios
This resolved the issue on a dell 6000 model and my MX17-r2.
Good luck hope it works for you too.....
I purchased CQ 45 a three months ago and after a week i stuck in problem that laptop stop charging around in two mins.it once i displace the battery it sharts charging for same duration. but rarely it i got fuly charges my laptop. i have visited repair shop and there I tried many battaries but same problem exists. on laptop in battey column mentioned HP HSTNN-C51C, but i m using HP HSTNN-LB72 does it make any difference? Is there problem in laptop or with battary?
OMG IT REALLY WORKED. THE FIRST I TRIED IT, IT DIDNT WORK. WAS GOING TO BUY A NEW BATTERY AND DECIDED TO TRY IT ONE MORE TIME AND IT WORKED. THANKS!!!
heyy, does anyone know what to do if you have a dell inspiron on windows vista, i have tried so many different methods but nothing is working, my thingy sayd 0% plugged in but not charging, it turns off imediatly if i unplug the charger and the battery is fairly new, only about 2-3 months. any advice? i would appreciate it so much.
The following steps may work if you removed your battery and have your laptop plugged in but it still shuts down as Windows is trying to load. A quick test to see if the following steps will work for you is as you are starting your laptop, press F2 and see if it doesn't shut down when you are in the BIOS setup. If your laptop remains on then the following may work for you: First, remove the battery and only have the power cord in. When you start the laptop, in the lower left it will ask you to hit F2 for setup. This will take you to the setup utility (mine is called Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility). At the top, you'll see "Others" in the menu bar area. Select "Others" and then look for the "Low Battery Alarm" and DISABLE the "Low Battery Alarm". Exit and SAVE the changes. Now maybe you can load windows and have your laptop stay on. This worked on a Toshiba Satellite a135-s4427 running Vista. Happy computing.
Thank you so much!!!! It worked right away :)
UNBELIEVABLE!!! THIS ACTUALLY WORKS GUYS...THANKS A TONNE FOR THE SOLUTION...
Thanks! This really works.
i have got a dell insipiron laptop and just recently this happened was that: my laptop charger was plugged in but it still said 0% but it said (plugged in , not charging) so i tried to shut the laptop down and charge it but it still says 0% but the laptop is working

i have hp dv4 laptop with window7 my problem is that when i on my laptop $charged it. It always shows that plucked in not charging. so plz try to solve my problem.....
Okay, I have a problem. I have a windows 7 laptop that I got back in Jan. There was small cover piece that went over the area that you place the charging cord. Well it broke off, and I've kept it. I've just been using it as is, and I was going to get it fixed later down the road. But here lately when I go to charge it, the light won't come on. It's not charging. I was just moving it around side to side for a couple minutes, and then it would work. Now that isn't even helping. I'm afraid it isn't the charger but the place where you insert that is messed up.
Is there anyway that can be fixed.. or am I SOL?
truly u guyz thats da solution for plugged in, not charging.it worked for my dell inspiron 1525.thanks alot guyz, wish all IT guys where like u,not mean on solutions.
Slampig74's recommendation worked for me as well. I have an HP Pavilion that is only 1 1/2 years old. My laptop battery is now charging as it should be. Thanks so much for this easy-to-follow, effective solution!
Slampig74's solution:
01. Turn off laptop.
02. Unplug AC power.
03. Remove battery.
04. Replace AC power.
05. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot.
06. Once logged in to the machine, perform a normal shut down.
07. Unplug AC power.
08. Replace battery.
09. Replace AC power.
10. Turn on laptop, allow OS to boot. The battery should once again be charging as normal.
Same problem on UPS light but it works fine with main light, so may be light voltage or something like that problem.
i had the same problem as you are... "Plugged in, Not Charging".. i panicked... What i did was that I SHUT IT DOWN , UNPLUGGED THE ADAPTER and REMOVED IT'S BATTERY,and WAIT for a few minutes...AND SMILE,.. AND alas!!! it will goes back to normal again, as if nothing happens...my DELL laptop is very okay now...
Hi, I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB1E0E and I have been having the same problem, "Plugged in, Not Charging" at 80%. After playing around with the Windows 7 battery settings for hours, I gave up. But then a couple of days later I figured that Sony have their own battery settings and you can set your computer to charge to whatever percentage you would like it to. It's some sort of battery long life care thing... So have a look in the Vaio Control Center > Power Management > Battery > Advanced Settings. The battery care function will appear. My laptop now charges to 100% then I unplug the battery.
Hope this helps.
HEY MAN......IT WORKS.... Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, Dis can b found in START menu-->devices n printers-->admin PC-->hardware-->select Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery--> properties-->change settings-->driver-->uninstall-->OK-->OK SHUT DOWN N POWER OFF....PUT BATTERY BACK...POWER ON N SWITCH ON... PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! cheeeeeeeeers!!!
I've been trying all these solutions, and it will start charging for a while, but then eventually goes back to plugged in, not charging in a day or less. I don't feel like doing this every day. Anyone else have a similar experience with a solution?
well itss stupd tbhh it says pluggin in not charging then after abit it says plugged in and charging :L
thanx mydo it actually worked its charging now i to have a dell laptop i was getting frusterrated for a bit thanx for helping me diganose the problem every dive this a try holding f+n and f2 do not push the + key just push down f and n and f2 and ur laptop may be charging agian :D
Finally I found a solution, I bought a new charger from amazon.com, great deal ( $ 29.00 ) and I just plugged it in my laptop and started charging right away. My Laptop is a Dell, but their original parts are really expensive.
I was so worried about replacing the mother board or even the laptop.
Easiest solution ever.
I hope this can help others.

Thanks, worked for my lenovo.
After a little more web research, it seems that a laptop and adapter may use a "one-wire" communication protocol to get to know each other. Presumably this provides a way for the laptop manufacture to be sure that you're using an adapter that they approve of. This protocol was originally designed for short distances - say between chips on a board, but it has been extended (or stretched?) to allow communications over the 2m cable bewteen the adapter and the motherboard. Unfortunately, the signaling protocol is sensitive to the transmission characteristics of the conductors. If the conductors in the cable or connectors are degraded a bit the signaling protocol may fail. Thus the technology that insures that you are using an approved adapter is also a technology that forces you to buy a new adapter or motherboard if the power connection quality drops below "communication grade". The fact that the cable's two wires are still obviously connected since they power the laptop in AC mode is a bit if a red herring.
So, if you think that your adapter cable or connector integrity has fallen below "communication grade", this could explain why you get the "AC adapter: unknown device installed" message - which in turn causes the laptop to decline to charge the battery.
I think the laptop's refusal to charge the battery under these circumstances is suspicious. If the power is good enough to run the laptop then why isn't it good enough to recharge the battery? Should the end user be forced to bear costs associated with failed components if those components are there primarily to force the end user to buy "approved" parts? I think that DELL (and others) should: a) release a utility that overrides the lockout so that we can charge our laptops with somewhat worn adapter cables, and b) release a BIOS upgrade that allows the laptop to charge the battery even when the adapter can not be identified. (Note that without (a) you can't get the battery charged up enough to install a BIOS upgrade.)
In the meantime, some of you might want to try doing a really good repair job on your cable. I hope this helps!
I'm a retard. I have a brand new MSI Gaming e7235 and i had the plugged in not charging issue. I thought this was serious thinking my laptop was bust out of the box. After reading all the horror stories on here and trying differnt things i finally figured it out that once my laptop reaches 95% or lower then it begins charging. This come standard now with all MSI laptops so the battery doesn't burn out.
i was having the same problem on my gateway nv52. i fixed the problem by doing a system restore to the last time it was working correctly.

I have a Dell inspiron 1501 that is 2 tears old. I just replaced the battery. When I turn it on it doesn't register as plugged in at all therefore it's not charging! Help me!
had this problem. looked on this thread, freaked out because my laptop is no longer on warranty. looked at my battery, realized it wasn't in right. so just take out your battery and put it back in, and it charges. hence why it can just work from the power source and not the battery
hey friends listen i read all your problems... but mine is little different from all this.. actually i have hp dv series laptop now more than a 1 yr old.. it will shut down by itself due to low battery even though the icon will show that 60 -65% power is remaining.. i dont know why this problem is occuring.. again i hav to use my charger to start my laptop..please help me if any1 can.......
I have an HP that had been giving me the "plugged in not charging" mwssage for a couple months. Tried just about everything mentioned here to fix it. New battery, charger, bios, etc, etc, etc. Sometimes it would charge for a while, then quit again. Finally tried an Antec charger with a slider to adjust the voltage. Plugged it in, adjusted it up to about 17V, the charge light came on and has been working great for 6 months.
I was having the same problem with a brand new Sony Vaio not charging the battery past 80%. I called Sony. There is a piece of software installed on the system that purposefully keeps the battery from charging all the way because they said that it will degrade the battery when you keep charging it up to 100%. In the "Vaio Control Center" under "power management", "battery control functions" uncheck the box for the "battery care function". This takes the block off and lets the system charge all the way up.
I was in my living room on my laptop and it was plugged in charging with everthing being fine. I unplugged the laptop and went in my bedroom and plugged it in and when I did all of a sudden it wasn't charging. I thought it was the outlet but it wasn't so I took my battery out and did various things and it still won't charge anymore and I don't know why. Ive only had my HP for 9 months and i don't know if it's the charger or should I replace the battery.
i have hp dv4-2045dx..windows 7..it also says that it is plugged in but not charging..is there another solutions other than removing the battery?? is that the battery or the adaptr??
I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon. Ronald @ van insurance

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook and had the exact same problem.
I called HP Technical Support and they fixed it for me. First, shut down your computer. Then, unplug all of your cords (including AC adapter). After this, turn the computer over and remove the battery, and then replace it after a few seconds so it's connected again. Plug all your cords back in.
Then, start up your computer. AS SOON AS YOU START IT UP, hit "F10" repeatedly to get to the BIOS screen. It should be a screen with options such as "F9: Restore Defaults" and "F10: Save and Exit".
Once here, hit "F9" one time and then Enter to restore defaults. Then, hit F10 once and Enter to save changes and exit the BIOS menu. Your computer will now boot up, and hopefully the problem is solved.
I have an HP Pavilion DV4T-1000, and doing this completely fixed my problem. Hope this helps.
i removed the battery to cool down, which didn't work, but when i changed power settings to "power saver" it started charging again.
I encountered the same 'plugged in, not charging' with a cheaper replacement adapter after my original Dell adapter (costs 75$) stopped working. After much battery freezing, unplugging, shutting down and restarting, the solution that worked for me was downgrading my bios version from A06 to A03. The only minus is the older bios has poorer power management, but at least I can use my laptop with freedom, instead of being chained to a desktop.
Moral of the story: It's the bios, not the operating system that allows or disallows charging, at least for Dell laptops ( I checked by booting into linux, which had the same issue )
i have a dell inspiron 1525 and nothing seems to work. I've tried everything mentioned here. I can't install BIOS because it says i need to have at least 10% charge. Is there anything else no one has mentioned
i found the soulution just now, just remove it from laptop, then return it back again, it will start recharging.
sweetlovre/ oussama
i found this on my Gateway. none of above didn't work and I called Gateway. They say it must be my AC adapter, so they are shipping a new one. Hope this will fix the problem...
maybe time to get a new charger

I've got the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite A135. Initially started as not charging well or acted like the AC was not connected unless I tried to fiddle with its connection - would sometimes work, sometimes not. Worked fine without battery in place. Progressed to randomly turning off even with battery out and only AC connected. Order replacement battery - doesn't work. Turns on for a second to boot then immediately off. Occasionally shows recognition of battery (light) and/or or AC adapter (light). Multiple CT guys (over phone) said probably problem where the battery actually connects. Could run up to 200-500 to fix. Blagh. Can someone suggest how to recover folders/files from the HD? Nothing horribly important but I would love to have them! Sorry if this is a common, easily fixed problem - I'm not that savvy :) Thanks in advance!
Mine is stuck at 9% with this scenario. Problem is, I use a Dell XPS 1530 and I have no clue how to remove the battery! I'd have to apparently unscrew a lot of stuff. I'm worrried about doing that. :(
Any tips? Any other solutions besides actually removing it?
Thanks.
I have the same problem, so I think I found an answer. It is the recepticle into which the AC plug goes into the laptop. I was wiggling it around a little today as the problem showed up. Have that little thing checked. All other answeres that I have read are not actually fixing the problem. So, I think it is just a faulty recepicle into which the AC plugs.

I have a HP Pavilion DV9000 series laptop. I had this problem come up a couple of days ago: "plugged in, not charging."
I had a chat session with HP tech support yesterday and did the following: Update BIOS Power Drain Power Management Reinstallation Battery Test
I am still having the problem so I contacted HP tech support again via chat. They are helpful if you are patient. It is either the motherboard battery connector or the power jack. Fortunately the laptop is under warranty so I will be sending it back to HP in a few business days.
I have HP Pavilion DV6 1235ee and i'm experiencing the same problem as yours. i have no time to call at HP tech and now i read your post and i will try this some of my free time...hope it works for me....
one thing i notice about having this problem...everitime i use my laptop and while the ac adaptor plug in, i observed that everitime my laptop gets hot that is the time that the battery indicator will become PLUGGED IN NOT CHARGING...one factor also the temp of my working area it increas the temp of my laptop thatz y itz easily get hot even if im using my cooling pad. so i try working wyling charging it up in a air conditioned room or using laptop with e-fan and no problem with it..it workz....i think itz the overheat making the problem exist...
i wanna know if this case happened to you???
and wanna know also that trying the instruction above from tech is effective and you never expirience the same problem agen en agen?
tnx:)
I had this problem on my Dell Inspiron 1525, contacted Dell got a new AC adapter and the problem, so far, is solved.
I've had this issue and read this thread with interest. Firstly, to conclude it is a Vista issue is wrong. For this issue to occur on various brands of laptop does not mean it's a Vista issue.
On my Dell XPS 1530 I tried:
Various combinations of removing charger/battery Updated BIOS
Nothing worked so contacted Dell as it was still just under warranty. They asked me to give the results of the battery info in the BIOS and then offered to send a replacement battery. I've had this a week and the problem has gone.
My conclusion is that there are multiple possibilities for this 'plugged in, not charging' message, not one. If a car does not start, there will be multiple possible reasons and you can't conclude any until you've tried a few things.
So I would suggest following this up under warranty if you can. The new Dell battery would have cost £107 so I'm very pleased I bothered to contact Dell (who were excellent).
I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 in April 2008. About 1 month ago I noticed that my computer would automatically shut down when the power cord was removed, I hovered over the battery icon in the bottom right corner and it said 0% available plugged in, not charging. I Googled the phrase plugged in, not charging and realised lots of people were having the same problem. I have tried • restarting and shutting down my computer (with and without battery and with and without power cord) • removing and replacing my battery (while laptop is on and off) • a replacement battery from Dell • my sister's battery and power cord (she also has a 1525)in my laptop and get the message plugged in, not charging. My battery in her laptop will charge but my power cord in her laptop says plugged in, not charging • removing the battery with the laptop on then restarting the laptop and replacing the battery • uninstalling and reinstalling the Power Management Software • switching between power plans • flashing with current bios All 3 batteries (hers, my original and my replacement) have adequate charge (50% or higher) I run with Windows Vista Home Basic edition I have been to the local Dell distributer and they tell me to call Dell. I have tried calling Dell but I keep getting put on hold for 30+ minutes. I tried to Chat online with a Dell representative but keep getting the message All chat representatives are currently busy assisting other customers or the queue is closed. Inspiron Chat is available Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM IST. I have send Dell 2 emails. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I just had a phone call from the Dell Online Techician. He said to; Shut Down the laptop. Press the power button then tap the F2 key until a blue screen appears. On the left sided menu arrow down to Battery Info. On the right side of the screen my computer showed • Battery Status = idol • Battery % Charged = 99% • AC Adaptor = Unknown Device Installed He then told me that he's have to post me a new ac adaptor, so fingers crossed that this will solve my problem!
4 above me, thank you so much! It was indeed the Battery Care Function on my VAIO FW26G. Forgotten I'd turned that on!
Really cool, now have it sitting at 50%, conserving battery life (if indeed it does..).
Okay, so I've seen almost every one of these posts, but nothing seems to work. I bought a Dell Xps M1330, almost a year ago, and it was 6 months old... After that when I turned it on, it gave 2 "Beep" noises. Which then I saw the disaster " PLUGGED IN NOT CHARGING " I bought another one from eBay. It worked for about an hour then again " PLUGGED IN NOT, NOT CHARGING" And only up to 55% charged. And now up to 10% battery life :'(. Please help
- Shafee
well first friend bad idea was buying it off ebay. U know things come with no guarantee on there so hope U got it for a good price. number 2 as a certified A+ tech ( also MCSE) you got beep codes when you started your computer. So there is possibly a fixable problem. Only that desktop PC all use around the same codes no matter the brand you have a laptop so you will need to look it up for your model and brand. ( example: 4 short beeps= video card error, 2 short 1 long= memory corrupt.. etc.) good luck..
noooo! Now 0 %
Well, flashing my bios with the most updated one seems to have worked, hallelujah. Tried the other options with no luck. FYI the laptops a HP Presario v6310.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1525 and only a week old and sometimes it's fine but other times when I start it up it says not charging. It seems to work when I restart the computer but I don''t want to have to keep doing this everytime it says this!
if your sony laptop shows ur battery is 80% -plugged in and not charging...it could be u have enabled "enabled battery care option and forgot..."in VIOA CONTROL CENTER,...once u uncheck.. battery charges up beyound 80%.
I too have the same problem. Mine is Dell Inspiron 1525 - just 4 months old. Dell replaced the Adapater, but still the problem exists. And if I take it out and plug it again, it starts charging. Can anyone please help how to fix this problem.
Mine is also Dell Inspiron 1525. Even if I restarts, it is not charging. However, if I take it out and plug it again in Adapter port, it starts charging.
I have the 1525 also. I only got this laptop in december and It's really annoying me as the laptop is new. Hopefully somebody will think of a solution and post it.
I had this problem and found a fix for it. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E. This is a vista feature to prolong the life on the laptop battery. Here is a link that explains how to fix it on a vaio. Im not sure if this will help but like it says its for battery care.
Here is the link guys hope this helps the many people that are having this problem.

Woops.. replied to wrong thread.. This worked for me, cheers! Def check this if you're a VAIO user.
I have a new HP laptop that is having the same problem and the way I got around it was to plug in the power adapter and disconnect the battery while the laptop was turned on. I leave my battery out for a few minutes then I plug it in and it starts charging again. I have done this at least 5 times now and it works everytime. Hope this helps.
yeah, jus had the same problem and it worked for me too (pull tha battery out with the power adapter still on and then put it back... bingo!!! mine is a HP too...
same problem on my hp laptop. at first, re-inserting the battery worked but the problem came back. it appears that this is not the permanent solution.
i also experience the same things at it works for some days but now not working.
For what its worth: I had the plugged in and not charging message too. shuting down and taking the battery out and putting it back in after a couple seconds worked just fine. So I second the other fifty people who said thats what works!!
for lenovo 3000 v100, i bought vista for iti and 5% available(plugged in , not charging) tried everything not work
I called Dell and plan to request a new battery. The tech staff use remote connection and updated the DELL XPS 1530 BIOS for me. The problem was solved. The battery can charge again.
Yeah, this lap top is not more than a week old. It charged for three minutes and then stopped. Battery isn't even hot. HP Pavilion dv7-1132nr. HP Sucks. Vista sucks. But I'll be damned if I can't run TF2 like a charm.
In my case I found that the Universal charger voltage was set too low, but would still power the laptop. So don't rule out a bad ACadapter.
Ok, so here is what I did, based on a comment I saw earlier here. Mine is a dell, btw. A user here said that he/she updated the A09 BIOS driver for his/her HP, from the HP site. So, I went to the Dell site, and tried finding the latest BIOS update, and finally downloaded and installed it. It flashes your BIOS once you run the setup (it doesn't cause any problem; just consider it as upgrading from XP to Vista). Once you do that, your BIOS should be updated. My battery started working this way, but other solutions mentioned here such as unplugging-plugging, removing the battery and fitting it in again, changing the Adapter are perfectly good solutions too. Everyone might have a different problem, so try everything, and one of these has to work. Usually, as I saw, the BIOS updates begin with the letter A followed by numbers. Good luck!
For the record, this killed my computer. I couldn't get past the bios splash after this.
give me any suggesion for my hp laptop plagged in 25% not charging
google spyware doctor worked for me
i had the same problem, windows vista is useless! i tried the spyware doctor someone below suggested and it worked for me.
I was down to 3% on my HP laptop, not charging. Tried Steve's suggestion with Device Manager and it didn't work. Then I ran PCTools' Spyware Doctor as suggested. After the scan, I checked the bubble above the battery indicator and it's now 'CHARGING' - and at 7% already! Who'd have thought it!
The method of which Steve mentioned above worked for me, thnx!
Unplug the power adapter, select Power Saver, replug the Power adapater. It will show "plugged in, charging". You can then change back to Balanced and it will work.
Overall disappointing - it should kick in charging the moment it is replugged in, without all this garbage.
Regards, Nikhil
Bless you!!! I tried uninstalling the software for the battery and reinstalling it... that didn't work... unplugging the battery didn't work... this option on unplugging, changing the power setting, and replugging is the only thing to have worked for me!
Stupid Vista... or whatever it is giving me this problem... this started two months after I got my brand new laptop. It disappeared for 6 months and now just came back. I have no clue what this is all about.
there seems to be so many different ways of gettin the battery back on too charge but this is still happening to my battery/laptop.it is only 7 months old itself. vista itself only says its a new battery that is required...more like a vista fault with software. i'll post something if i find anything more solid
I tried a bunch of different suggestions here with no success. then I ran spyware doctor (from google). not sure if it was a coincidence but the battery prob went away . . . lets see for how long!
uninstalling and installing Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, worked for me, but on did when I removed the AC power, uninstalled and installed (note while AC is still out), I plugged back the power everything worked perfectly. (Not again, it didn't work while AC was plugged in.
Hope that solves it for everyone.
Thanks this worked for me:)
Did not work for me. (Toshiba A135-S4427)
thanks

thanks a lot sir, ur trick worked for me ......thanks again......
don't just click on the restart because i did that and it didnt work. Instead just click on the "shut down". When you turn your laptop back on it'll probably say its charging. hope this helps.
First time it just shut down without a warning or anything. Now that I know what the problem is, I'm pissed because this computer is relatively new.
"plugged in, not charging" Thats like saying... "new 52'' LCD T.V., not going to turn it on"
try to turn off your computer with the adapter plugged in. the turn it back on, it should now say charging. it just worked on my hp
i've done it NUMEROUS times. i turned it off then turned it on. It would say charging but after like 5 min it would say "plugged in, not charging". i hate HP.
I had the same problem with my toshiba satellite pro Think part of the problem is with the Vista OS
This is what i did to solve the problem
1. Plug out the AC Adapter 2. Switch the Power option mode to Power Saver 3. Plug back in the AC Adapter
Only annoying bit is the laptop is very slow when its in the power saver mode.
Hope that helps someone.
As i said mine is a Toshiba laptop not sure if this will work for other laptop brands.
Hope Microsoft comes up with a patch for this one.
Have a good day RainManAlex
Maan, my battery is showing 0% charged... it just shuts down the moment i unplug my adapter... I cant even charge my HP battery a bit.. m pissed off with HP. :-(
While your comp is plugged in, remove the battery, type "device drivers" in the search box, right click and unistall both the APCI compliant control method battery, and the microsoft AC adapter, then replace the battery. Wait about 3 minutes, then restart the computer. Should take care of all of it. I did this with my Dell XPS M1530 laptop and it worked wonderfully!
If you power off you laptop and then unplug and plug the adapter back in, the battery should start charging, the charge light will be on. Wait for awhile to allow the battery to charge before turning the computer back on.
Hae!! Same proble with Dell!! too... 4 months since I got the laptop. Called support... they are sendig new battery and update to bios...
Has anyone tried loading XP as it seems to be a visa fault?
I have XP and it still happens on an HP.
I am a PC Tech and am working on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 laptop. I thought it was the DC jack. DC jack is fine. I've read several blogs that seem to point to a hardware problem (motherboard) causing the issue.
I experience intermittent charging ability. The AC light at times refuses to acknowledge the presence of AC power. I'm starting to believe it is Vista causing the issue.
With the battery removed the laptop will power off. Maybe a thermal issue not sure yet.
With the AC light on battery "not charging" the laptop will run until the battery is dead, resulting in a hard power off. Laptop will run with the battery removed, but it also will suddenly power off...making me think it is a thermal/heat issue.
At any rate, uninstalling the acpi compliant control method battery and searching for hardware changes is working right now...but i'm not holding my breath unless the thing works for a few days.
Thanks for the info it was right on target.
mike
Mike,
I have the exact same model and problem. Did you figure it out?
I have a toshiba satellite also and i have the same problem. Only mine still does not charge. Also sometimes the AC adaper sparks when I plug it in. You think it might be the adapter or battery?
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.
1.
Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
2.
Expand the Batteries category.

Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
4.
On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.
i will try this later at home hope this will work for me.i have hp dv61235ee and win7...
Thanks, This worked for me on a Gateway that is only about a month old.
reasonable suggestion, thanks, didnt work however, hp compaq 2230s windows vista business sp1
Thanx alot!!! this came in very handy
Thank you so much. This has been pissing me off. I was about to go buy a new battery. I decided to check the internet and I saw your post. It worked right away. Thank you so much!!!!!!! I have a hp dv6000.
This suggestion worked for me too...except I had to uninstall then unplug and plug in the battery to get it to recognise properly and start charging....thanks!
i did tht and it started working! thanks
This workded for me.. Thanks alot :p
Thanks, that worked for me. I have a HP DV6100 series.
this worked!! thank you so much!
you can ad acer to to the list. My acer laptop does the same stupid crap of plugged in, not charging!!
I have don what u said and it will charge for about 10 sec and then it goes back to not charging
i have an hp and it didn't work for me either...
yah! it worked. thanks :]
that doesnt work for me???? what other options do i have???
uinstall SP2 in progams and features
Hey this was really helpful my notebook is charging properly again! thanks for the post!
Not only HP, have the same problem with my Fujitsu Siemens, so I think it's a Vista problem. Just now mine says, 0% available(plugged in, not charging) Mine does the same after reboot, or unplug and plug it again
I have the same thing with my Dell Inspiron 1525. This is my second (very expensive) power cord tha that I've replaced. It was working before, I stayed unpluged for a while, and then it stopped working
Same problem with a Dell Inspiron 8500 on Vista Ultimate. Typical Microsoft selling us a third time round with sub-standard basic routines.
Add Gateway to that list. I bought my laptop new about three months ago and it started doing this today. Was anyone able to figure out what's going on or what to do? Thanks, Kristen
Another HP one: Pavilion dv9212. Barely a year old, longer than everybody here but still too short for normal battery lifespan
dell xps m133o added the the list.
Add xps m1210
add hp compaq cq40 317tu on vista home basic. the sales guy told me to remove battery for a few minutes, power on laptop directly, and then fix the battery back after a few secs. However this didnt work. What worked was reinstalling vista. Also i tried charging from a different charging point and it worked fine even before reinstalling vista.
so acer (extensa 4420-5239) .. PLEASEE SOMEONE HELP ME!!
Add Dell Inspiron 1525 to the list on vista home premium
Same goes with Dell Inspiron 1525. Idk if Vista sucks, but many of my friends have had the same problem. For me, though, it starts working when I right click on the battery icon in the taskbar, and click "Dell recommended settings" even if it is selected, and the battery starts charging. However, it is not always the case. Sometimes rebooting helps. And today, nothing helps. Ok, I take my statement back. Vista sucks!
Brand new HP compaq 2230s (Windows Vista Business Edition), battery out of package has no charge, adapter when plugged in says,'Plugged In, Not Charging'. If you unplugg adapter from laptop, it immediately turns off, proving no charge in brand new battery and that adapter was not charging it. Searching HP website said it had to do with the charging algorithm, charge trickles into battery for 1/2 hr before power led displays active charging. Unfortunately this is bullsh*t since even half an hour status quo maintained. Besides who wants to wait 1/2 hr every time you want to charge a battery from zero :s, if I find something useful, I shall post.
I have the same problem. Anyone willing to tell us a solution?
I HAVE THE SOLUTION !! Finally, after, like 20 support calls, I got one of them to send me a new power pack. voilla ! it's fixed! is your power pack getting warm at all ? it should be. if it's now, it's defective get them to replace the power pack
I have a HP dv6000 series...It happened the same...I realized it was because of the sp2 I had just installed in my notebook...Thanks Vista!...then I uninstalled it...at the same time the batery started charging....I hope it helps
I have a HP dv6000 series...It happened the same...I realized it was because the battery was completely dead So this is what I did. With the laptop on I removed the battery, then shut down windows, then put the battery back in and restart the notebook. stop at the sing in screen just leave is set there for about 10 to 15 minutes you will see that the battery light is charging, after 15 minutes or so put your password in and start windows you will see its charging it’s like a car with a dead battery with no volts in the battery a 12 volt charger won’t start charging till there is 1 volt in it by jumping a little 9 volt battery just for a second it will start charging but that is a car battery but this works about the same way without jumping it..lol..Thanks and yes Vista! Very Very much does suck...I hope it helps, TaZ-MaN
THANK YOU very much sweeetie i did what you ve done and it was fixed than you thank you thank you i love you THAAAANKS, you are genius, i loved what you said about the car stuff
And for those users who purchase Dell when building your own system and it comes to upgrading your AC Adapter, Do it otherwise buying a separate one will cost you more than a ten dollar upgrade.
Simply right click on the power options on your taskbar. Choose Power Options. Underneath the plan you currently have selected click on Change Plan Settings. Now click on Restore Default Settings For This Plan. Click Yes when the screen pops up asking you if you are sure. That should fix the problem.
P.S. If you do not see power options on the taskbar then click on Start > Control panel > Mobile PC > Power Options.
I restored default settings and all is well--thanks!
Hello, good luck for me I was looking for this information for several months ago. Finally I got it all here. Thanks a lot! Ronald @ van insurance uk
its imay be vista and it may be not.my laptop is not new and the problem started after i changed the charger.my original chargers cable got snaped and i found exactly the same size nipple and replaced it,but probably it sends different power supply.flat battery charges in like 5 minutes (cool lol) but also i get a burning smell out of my laptop :-((.well,its still running,i dont know for how long lol.
I found a solution, when your computer is on and plugged in, remove the battery (Since it's using power from the mains only this will not turn off the computer). The power icon will have an X on it, saying no battery detected. Then put the battery back in, it will take a sec, realise theres a battery and start charging again :) hope this works for you guys too!!
Hi.. i tryied too.. but no use.. i have toshiba brand new Laptop only 3 weeks old..
Please tell me some suggessions..
This didn't work for me :( My battery is at 0% a not charging, so whenever the charger falls out it immediently turns off, EXTREMELY anoyying. It's been doing this for a while now, I had it working by taking the battery out, leaving it for a bit then putting it back in but even that's not working now.
Thank you! Wish I'd tried this first... but I'm just glad it's fixed cause it was really annoying!
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! DiZ REALLY WORKED =)
Worked for me too!
Awesome, this worked for me 20th March 2009. Thanks for this!
It turned out to be the AC Adapter for me. Anyone with this problem try the following: 1. Check the power adapter - is it the correct one for the laptop? The laptop may power on with an incorrect one but won't charge. It may also be faulty. 2. Uninstall/reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery. 3. Try updating the BIOS.
Hope this helps somebody.
please tell me the way to upgrade my BIOS. my current version is A09 and the new one to be updated is A16. i could not update it from windows . i tried making my USB drive bootable and then copied the file into my pen drive and then tried booting my machine. it shows that the file is corrupt although i downloaded the file from dell's support page. please mail me the steps to savioceg@gmail.com
I have a dell inspiron 1525, i tried removing the battery pack from my laptop and then plugged in again.this solution is not working and i could not update the BIOS through flashing, can anyone please tell me the steps to update the BIOS in machine. please do mail me @ savioceg@gmail.com as i wont be going thru the forums on regular basis. my laptop is still under warranty and when i called the support ppl , they said i need to purchase a new battery as degradation of battery does not come under warranty.
i had the same problem.. all i did was take out the battery, clean it up a bit and put it back on and everything seem to be working fine again

I had similar problem with my HP laptop. I just took the battery out an put it back in after few minutes. Its charging like normal now. :)
this is all about your a/c adaptor, i had the same problem, i chance the a/c adaptor and it work now fine. For some reason my wire cord got damage from the inside, i think chair wheels past over it.
Check your a/c adaptor the wire may have broken from the inside, i had the same problem, after i buy or replace the a/c adaptor it worked fine
Yes, my battery was on 39% plugged in but not charging. I shut down the computer and removed the battery for some few seconds and fixed it back. Then it started charging. So try that and it will work.
6-21-08 It happens that my Dell Inspiron 1420 is still within Dell Support contract, I called them and they dispatched a onsite support technician to replace the AC adator and the battery (6-cell 65W) with new ones. This immediately addressed the problem. FYI, my OS is Windows Vista and i know a lot has been mentioned about its poor management of Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control, but in my case, this wasn't the problem as hardware replacement fixed my "Plugged in, not charging problem."
Jeff
Just take out the battery for a few minutes, switch off all the cabels then put it all together again and it should work. Vista sucks.
I had the same problem and found this site before I could sovle it. My computer was saying 0% available (plugged in not charging) There is a battery diagnostic utility built in to windows vista that will test your battery. the first time I tried it it said replace battery. I disconnected battery while a/c was plugged in reconected after 15 - 20 seconds and tried again then it said the battery was good now it is charging try that hope it works for you because it was driving me crazy.
Bishop
I had this problem w. my windows vista hp and i have found the solution. the battery bar in the right corner said that it was plugged in, but wasnt charging. i decided to remove the battery from my laptop after shutting it down. then i put the battery back in after a few seconds. and it began to charge. hope this helps.
i just had the exact same problem less than a minute ago, and i did what this guy did and now it is charging like normally. i think the battery may have been too hot to charge because i had it on like all day, sitting on my bed.
i took the battery out and fanned it around for a few seconds to get cool before putting it back in and it charged normally when i powered on my hp laptop
i also have the same problem,, my lap top is 2 months old.. hp really sucks
this problem seems to come when the laptop/battery is too hot, i unplugged mine, moved it somewhere cool and plugged it, 3 minutes later it was charging normally
Wow thanks so much! it helped ;)
same for me - i turned off laptop, took battery out to cool for 5-10 min, switched back on & charging as normal. note - my HP Battery Check was telling me i needed a new battery when it wasn't charging. now that it's chargin again Battery Check telling me it's in good condition!!
i was to stupid to take it out right away, my internet started to shut down, and then it started blinking red and orange, so i turned it off. but when i tried to charge it this morning, it wouldn't charge! i took out the battery snd cleaned out the compartment, but it still won't work! please help me!!!
thats not the problem becouse my laptop is cold and its happing just take it out and put it back in.its becouse when you put the battery in not all the gold meddle pecies are touching the ones on the other side so by moving it a little the problem should be fixed
thanks a lot, my battery works again normally.
it is not hp's fault. it happens with all brands, dell, hp, toshiba
I've had the same problem in my HP Presario F500 This time it was because i had not used the laptop for about a month and it had gone flat and wouldn't charge. I took the battery out and put it in the frezer for about 10 mins, no longer!!!! hey presto, its charging again. lets blame vista its crap
Regards, Rob
I had the same problem - I am sure it is a Vista problem, since I also removed my battery and then put it back in & then it started charging again. My laptop is only 7 months old, but has otherwise been fine.
I have the same problem. Even battery has been replaced, after 2 weeks problem restarted. Anybody have the solution? Laptop is only 4 months old os is Vista Home Premium.
I just had the same problem, but I unplugged my external hard drive and it started to charge again. I suppose the external hard drive uses up extra power that would be used to charge the battery
This worked for me. Strange problem... Thanks
just take the charger out and plug it back in
I have the same prob.
Just took the battery out waited 10min. re-installed, started charging. Thanks to those who respond to questions!!
okay, i have a Dell insprion 1525 but i had exactly the same problem, well its my moms laptop but yannoo. and while i was actually on the laptop, like it was on and stuff, i took the battery, out like half a minute later, but it back in and dada, your done :)
Really breathtaking further informative topic. Thank you seeing sharing this. 640-802
Out of warranty Toshiba A200. So far I have: > update BIOS to current version > replaced the battery > replaced the power adapter > uninstalled ACPI battery driver > every combination of plugging/unplugging/rebooting > virus and spybot scans > ensured all Vista updates are installed > reset the BIOS to default
Downloaded and running the Google Spyware Doctor software, which found a bunch of stuff that Spybot didn't find. Fingers crossed that this fixes it, however unlikely, because now I am out of options.
i had the same problem. then i realized i had mixed my new laptops battery with my old one.
exact same problem on my 6mnths old VOSTRO 1500
Hi, I also have a vostro 1500 and am having this problem of "plugged in, not charging" Could you tell me how you fixed it, if you have
thanks! I have a Dell and the same thing happened to me; i just took the battery out and put it back in and pronto! its working again.
I rebted a new laptop today through radio rentals. I rented a Acer 5735Z. I plugged the charger in to charge batter said 98% not charging. i did everything on this site as listed and changed setting to power save mode restarted the laptop and it worked. This is obviously a Issue with Vista as all brands of laptops are doing this. Though I am the first to report it on a Acer with a manufacturing date Feb 2009.
just unplugged ur charger for 3 or 4 minutes then plug it again will work again
HELLO EVERYONE, IT'S FUNNY HOW SOME ARE SO CONVINCED IT'S A BATTERY/ADAPTER ISSUE. IF IT WERE A HARDWARE ISSUE HOW COULD SO MANY OTHER EXPERIENCE THE SAME THING? COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT. THE COMMON DENOMINATOR HERE IS WINDOWS VISTA. SOME HAVE SWITCHED TO XP AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE, BUT STARTED OUT WITH VISTA.
THE REAL ISSUE IS VISTA AND YOUR BIOS. YOUR BIOS LIKELY NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO KEEP UP WITH VISTA AND IT'S PLENTIFUL UPDATES. YOUR BIOS IS A CHIP WITH FIRMWARE THAT CONTROLS YOUR INPUTS AND HAS IT'S OWN BATTERY SO REMOVING THE NOTEBOOK BATTERY WON'T AFFECT IT.
THE ONLY PERMANENT SOLUTION IS TO UPDATE YOUR BIOS!!! IF YOU'VE TRIED THAT AND THE ISSUE PERSISTS CHANCES ARE YOUR PC MANUFACTURER HASN'T COME OUT WITH A BIOS UPDATE TO CORRECT IT YET.
I had this problem as well. First I tried what someone had mentioned, removing my battery for a while and then replacing it. The first time I did that it worked. Then a few days later my laptop was back to plugged in but not charging. I tried removing the battery again, but it didn't work again. Finally my battery got down to 0% available, so every time it came unplugged it just turned off! Then I noticed that it turned off a few times while still being plugged in. I took a look at my power cord and noticed that where the cord meets the thing that you plug into the computer was bent really badly and that it probably had some sort of short in it. A week or so later the cord was coming completely apart and I could see the shielding wires were snapped. I ordered a new power cord from ebay and it came today. I plugged it in and now my battery is charging. So maybe it is a problem with the power cord? I'll post again if the battery stops charging again...but I hope that this has fixed the problem.
hmm ok so i think i have the same problem as you did. i think that the wire in my charger snapped i have 2 bend the wire upward for it to charge if i need a new one im curious how much one may cost how much did yours cost? lemme kno as soon as possible? thanks
Problem is either the A/C Adapter you're using is the wrong one, or the power cord in not plugged in all the way. Try unplugged the power cord and plugging it back in. If that's not it then it's the wrong A/C Adapter.

what kind of a solution is that? The adapter magically changes from what you've been using all of a sudden?
This happening to me today..my laptop is plug in but wont charge. I went to hp website and downloaded the BOIS driver reinstall it and it work...
If you let a fan blow on your laptop, it usually cools the battery down pretty quick. and it automatically starts charging. I bought a thing at the store the other day that you rest your laptop on and it tilts towards you. Its a little metal stand thing, but its like mesh looking with all the holes in it. It stops it from overheating since the battery has room to cool.
I had all but given up, I tried everything here on my 1 month old Dell Studio. So I tried the google spyware doctor and it worked! I can't even imagine why, but it worked like a charm!
Hello all, I have a HP Pavilion dv4...had this same problem...Fixed by removing battery and plug, replacing battery, replacing plug...leaving alone for 5 minutes, then started. Battery was showing 4% (not charging) but is now indicating 100%...Leads me to think it was fully charged all along but there was a problem reading the correct charge from the battery. Could be it wasn't charging because it COULDN'T charge anymore, but whatever is responsible for reading the power left in the battery was having an issue and was misreporting. This would cause a shutdown if the driver or whatever "thought" the battery was low enough, even if it had plenty of power. Very frustrating, my sympathy to u guys still fighting it. Best of luck!
thank god for these online answers jus take the battery out an put it bak in a few mins later anyways boyys stay off the porn
Think about the basic design of a battery, it is a collection of particles that move rapidly to generate energy. The fast the particles move, the more energy (and heat) is created. Once they hit a certain amount, they are expending energy at a 100% rate and not taking in energy. When these particles are allowed to slow down (shutting laptop down and removing battery) they are no longer required to create enegy. This allows them to slow and retain energy instead of expending it. To dumb it down a little, the when a battery is extremely hot, it cannot charge. Unplug it, let if cool down and it will charge as normal.
Not true. A cold start after a night of non-use and my computer says plugged in, not charging. Also, sometimes after running a while, if I keep unplugging and plugging in my AC adaptor, it suddenly starts charging normally (for a good stretch of time anyway). Clearly, it's warmer after it's been running a while, and yet, that's when it starts charging.
PS. I've tried every fix on this page short of replacing parts (because every time I have them worked on, the technicians say nothing's wrong), and nothing is permanent. I'll post again on every thread I can find if I ever find the solution.
While your comp is plugged in, remove the battery, type "device drivers" in the search box, right click and unistall both the APCI compliant control method battery, and the microsoft AC adapter, then replace the battery. If it does not seem to work after you restarted your laptop, leave the charger plugged onto the laptop for awhile and it will eventually start to charge
Hi everyone ! I got the same issue, and this is what i did to get battery charge back. 1. Unplugged AC cord, and drain out battery until you can’t boot system no more. 2. Take out battery, and put it in cooler, NOT FREEZER. Please !!!
Then 3 hours later, put battery and plus in. WOOOOORRRRRKKKKKKS ! It’s Works . Yahooooooo! Any question to ask, please email me at davidtran9178@gmail.com Help community, help yourself.

I just wanted to chime in that I agree with your comment. I am a web designer and computer tech and some of the above mentioned "fixes" are just silly and make me laugh. I just want to add some thoughts about this issue since I have encountered this too.
First of all silly tricks are not solutions so people please stop spreading "fixes" that are based on magic, like taking out the battery and putting it in the freezer. Do you realize that extreme cold and extreme hot are not good for your computer or battery. In the manual there is even a warning that says: expose to either hot or cold are BAD, so don't do it. In addition these silly "tricks" are pointless because they are tricks and not REAL fixes. No amount of clever trickery is going to fix a BIOS issue or a bug that hasn't been addressed by your computer manufacture or microsoft. For example, this issue, was fixed on my Dell Inspiron 1526 by downloading and installing the most updated version of the BIOS. On the other hand if you go to your manufacturers website or call and complain about it and they can't fix it, its because they are either 1) working on it, or 2) can't tell you how to fix it because they don't know its an issue yet. Unfortunately when a fix is available its because they waited to hear thousands upon thousands of complaints before they invest time, energy, and money into fixing it. Also keep in mind that Vista is still in its infancy. While it is over a year old lets not forget how long it took XP to become bearable, and dare I say it "good". So a good rule with Vista is to UPDATE constantly, if you see that you need an update, download it. Don't wait. Also if your computer came with a update tool from the manufacturer use that too, and use if often.
Ok so I am blue in the face now from this "take care of your computer" lecture. I also want to add that yes if your AC adapter breaks, or has loose wires that needs to be replaced. If that fixes your issue then great. AC Adapters can and will stop working correctly.
1. Check for BIOS updates 2. Make sure Vista is updated 3. Make sure your adapter is good, if not get a working one
Let me leave you with a profound statement that my grandfather told me when I was a child, "Son, if its man made, its subject to failure at any time."
Hope this all helps, and don't hate Vista or Bill, or your manufacturer, don't hate anyone. Just remember its a computer, its not better than you....lol. Ok, yes you can hate Vista and Bill for screwing up another opportunity to make a good OS.
Oh for all the other computer geeks, "Open it in Notepad, notepad will open anything!" Hope that helps.
Thanks, and take care
There is a very simple diagnosis to your problem. If the computer is not charging the battery when its shutdown/powered of completely and plugged in its not Vista its the power supply, BIOS or the motherboard. If it does charge when shutdown and plugged in and does not when turned on its Vista.
hey actually i'm facing the same problem with my inspiron laptop 1545 (dell).its bios is A05.do i still need to update it and can i do t myself because i read its a complicated process and has risks.also, does bios effect internet... since i hv been facing the problem with my usb modem (for internet connection) and someone has suggested that updating bios will solve the problem.
yes, could be BIOS issue with Vista. try downloading the updated version of bios
how would you flash your BIOS if the battery is already at 5% (>%10) ?
mne is stc at 5 and if i plug out the cord at al it goes completely dead tried a couple of these and didnt seem to work help plz
I haven't read every comment, so if this has been clarified please excuse me: Not every one here the same problem. Its very possible if your computer will charge while its turned off, but not when its running it could be a BIOS/software issue. Mine does not charge AT ALL, which obviously makes it a hardware issue. If you search you will find this is one of the most common issues that HP and Toshiba laptops have. Second to OVERHEATING. Most of you need to find a professional repair shop (not best buy, a real repair shop) and hope that its just a problem with the power jack or a diode, not a chip or fried board. Regardless, if you think that its a "Vista problem", I'd be willing to bet that you won't be able to take apart your computer and fix it yourself. All these little tricks WILL NOT work, they are temporary fixes...you should just go to a professional before you cause more damage trying to plug and unplug to fix your "Vista problem".
You need to remove the battery temporarily for a few minutes and when you return it to the laptop it should continue to show the correct battery power. If it doesn't consider taking it back to the shop as there is likely a fault there. Chloe van
jst change the charger of ur laptop thtz it...the capacitor of the charger z nt passing much ampere....thtz y it says tht....i was having same problem bt after changing capacitor....the problem solved...reply on my email tht z sameed@live.com.pk....if ur problem solves
i had this problem with my new gateway so i emailed their support team and this is what they told me to do.. i dont know if it will work for all pcs but it worked for mine first time
Inorder to resolve the, please perform a power drain.
>Drain stored power and restart computer
1.Turn off computer and unplug power cord. 2. Disconnect all external devices. 3. Remove the battery. 4. Press power button and hold for 10 to 15 seconds. 5. Plug power cord back into computer and press power button. 6. Check front panel LEDs (lights) on bezel (front face) or optical drives and listen for power supply fan. 7. If LEDs are on or power supply fan starts spinning, watch for boot screen on monitor. 8. If computer begins to start, turn it off. 9. Reconnect any external devices. 10.Press the power button and make sure the computer starts.
I have this same problem, usually I just take the battery out and put it back in and it will resume charing. Does anyone have a REAL solution to this though to make it always charge? Laptop: HP Pavillion dv9000
my computer is doing the same thing i have it pluuged in and it says plugged in,not charging. i cleaned the battery thing(metal)without water and it still wont work right. i dont want to have to buy a new battery but please tell me something i can do.
This is definitely a vista (or a driver) issue, since there are at least three to four types of laptops that have this problem, mine included. Mine's a semi custom-made one from cyberpowerpc.com. I fixed my problem by unplugging the ac adapter, reinstalling the battery driver, then plugging it back in.
yeah, i had the same problem...."plugged in, not charging".. but i took out my battery and then put it back in after a few minutes and it was charging normally.
Hello,
PROBLEM I HAD My Dell 1525 crashed and I had to re-boot the system. Once I had re-installed everything it appeared that there was an issue with Vista recognising my Dell charger. The message that I was getting was that it was "plugged in - Not Charging".
My Dell is quite new and was quite confident that there was no issue with the battery nor the charger and this was an issue with the system software wither from Vista or Dell.
SOLUTION I found this forum and saw lots of people with the same issues. Mostly the solution was to flash the BIOS or buy a new battery and I wanted to do neither.
I went to dell.com to their downloads section for my model Dell (1525 inspiron). I then downloaded under utilities - Dell recommended Power Management Settings Vista) and this fixed the problem immediately. My laptop now not only recognises the charger but now reads the correct battery level no problems.
If you have another brand then go to that brands webpage and I am sure they all have a similar software that is required so your system can recognise the battery.
I did that with Toshiba, but it didn't work. So, I just rebooted, hit F2, went to the last tab, restored default settings. So, now my battery is charging, and pretty fast! So, maybe this is something to try.
I have the same problem, so I think I found an answer. It is the recepticle into which the AC plug goes into the laptop. I was wiggling it around a little today as the problem showed up. Have that little thing checked. All other answeres that I have read are not actually fixing the problem. So, I think it is just a faulty recepicle into which the AC plugs.
i bought my msi gx620 laptop last 3 months ago. the battery started to have this problem "plugged in not charging". i called the supplier, they replaced it with the second battery and its still the same. i dont know what to do.seems the technician of msi doesnt know what hes doing, or he doesnt know anything just blah blah blah
My solution was as per an earlier posting, which initially I didn't believe would work!
Laptop was HP NX7400. The charge light on the front of the laptop was never coming on, and the battery was not charging. I had just received it back from HP after they had fixed the screen, so I was worried they had broken something else/not plugged all wires back in internally...
Steps I took:
1. Had laptop running on mains power with Vista running 2. Shut down Vista 3. Removed power cable from rear of laptop 4. Removed battery 5. Plugged power cable back into laptop, but didn't boot up 6. After a few seconds, removed power cable from back of laptop 7. Put battery back in 8. Plugged power cable back into laptop. Charging light came on immediately.
It looks like at a hardware level it needs to get into a state where is recognises there is mains power and no battery to charge, and then you can add the battery and it recognises there is mains power and a battery present to charge. Odd.
u r really great it helped me...thank u so much.
