At times there is an issue with the capacitor in the adapter hence the issue.

I had a chat session with HP tech support yesterday and did the following: Update BIOS Power Drain Power Management Reinstallation Battery Test

I am still having the problem so I contacted HP tech support again via chat. They are helpful if you are patient. It is either the motherboard battery connector or the power jack. Fortunately the laptop is under warranty so I will be sending it back to HP in a few business days.

Here is my case. The problem started yesterday and my laptop is about 4 months old. I run a Dell 1525 w/ windows vista. I have tried the following that were fruitless in my case:

    1. Flashed BIOS to the latest update

    2. Unplugged the Laptop w/o the adapter then plugged it in and turn it on (this did work for about 2hrs, but it has beared no result since)

    3. Put Battery in fridge in hopes of it only being a thermal problem

    4. Ran both "Google Doctor" and "Spybot: Search and Destroy"

    5. Unplugging and plugging in the battery and ac adapter in various orders and manner.

    6. Used Father's Ac adapter (he also owns a Dell w/ the same 65w charger)

I also have that issue, I went on every forum and tried everything that was suggested. nothing worked. Except my computer originally came with a 60 watt AC adapter. I plugged in a 90 watt adapter and that solved the problem. Apparently with Vista being such a high power usage operating system and lots of programs running in the background I needed a higher watt adapter to keep up with the power and battery charger. Hope this helps. And for those users who purchase Dell when building your own system and it comes to upgrading your AC Adapter, Do it otherwise buying a separate one will cost you more than a ten dollar upgrade

I had the same issue and i thought that it was my puppy and kitty's fault for chewing the charger to the point where i had to tape it...[-_-]...It was a while that my laptop was only runing while connected and if disconnected it will turn off. What I did is shut it down, unplugged it, took off the battery and cleaned it, specially the little teeth and put the battery back on and plug it in and turn it on. Boila...It worked...was so happy it was charging again, there was no more "pligged in, not charging" it was plugged in; charging! So try that and see if it works for you too!if not there might be a problem with your battery not your charger. Good Luck!

I've had this issue and read this thread with interest. Firstly, to conclude it is a Vista issue is wrong. For this issue to occur on various brands of laptop does not mean it's a Vista issue.

On my Dell XPS 1530 I tried:

Various combinations of removing charger/battery Updated BIOS

Nothing worked so contacted Dell as it was still just under warranty. They asked me to give the results of the battery info in the BIOS and then offered to send a replacement battery. I've had this a week and the problem has gone.

My conclusion is that there are multiple possibilities for this 'plugged in, not charging' message, not one. If a car does not start, there will be multiple possible reasons and you can't conclude any until you've tried a few things.

So I would suggest following this up under warranty if you can. The new Dell battery would have cost £107 so I'm very pleased I bothered to contact Dell (who were excellent).

HELLO EVERYONE, IT'S FUNNY HOW SOME ARE SO CONVINCED IT'S A BATTERY/ADAPTER ISSUE. IF IT WERE A HARDWARE ISSUE HOW COULD SO MANY OTHER EXPERIENCE THE SAME THING? COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT. THE COMMON DENOMINATOR HERE IS WINDOWS VISTA. SOME HAVE SWITCHED TO XP AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUE, BUT STARTED OUT WITH VISTA.

THE REAL ISSUE IS VISTA AND YOUR BIOS. YOUR BIOS LIKELY NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO KEEP UP WITH VISTA AND IT'S PLENTIFUL UPDATES. YOUR BIOS IS A CHIP WITH FIRMWARE THAT CONTROLS YOUR INPUTS AND HAS IT'S OWN BATTERY SO REMOVING THE NOTEBOOK BATTERY WON'T AFFECT IT.

THE ONLY PERMANENT SOLUTION IS TO UPDATE YOUR BIOS!!! IF YOU'VE TRIED THAT AND THE ISSUE PERSISTS CHANCES ARE YOUR PC MANUFACTURER HASN'T COME OUT WITH A BIOS UPDATE TO CORRECT IT YET.

I had this problem as well. First I tried what someone had mentioned, removing my battery for a while and then replacing it. The first time I did that it worked. Then a few days later my laptop was back to plugged in but not charging. I tried removing the battery again, but it didn't work again. Finally my battery got down to 0% available, so every time it came unplugged it just turned off! Then I noticed that it turned off a few times while still being plugged in. I took a look at my power cord and noticed that where the cord meets the thing that you plug into the computer was bent really badly and that it probably had some sort of short in it. A week or so later the cord was coming completely apart and I could see the shielding wires were snapped. I ordered a new power cord from ebay and it came today. I plugged it in and now my battery is charging. So maybe it is a problem with the power cord? I'll post again if the battery stops charging again...but I hope that this has fixed the problem.

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook and had the exact same problem.

I called HP Technical Support and they fixed it for me. First, shut down your computer. Then, unplug all of your cords (including AC adapter). After this, turn the computer over and remove the battery, and then replace it after a few seconds so it's connected again. Plug all your cords back in.

Then, start up your computer. AS SOON AS YOU START IT UP, hit "F10" repeatedly to get to the BIOS screen. It should be a screen with options such as "F9: Restore Defaults" and "F10: Save and Exit".

Once here, hit "F9" one time and then Enter to restore defaults. Then, hit F10 once and Enter to save changes and exit the BIOS menu. Your computer will now boot up, and hopefully the problem is solved.

I have an HP Pavilion DV4T-1000, and doing this completely fixed my problem. Hope this helps.

If you let a fan blow on your laptop, it usually cools the battery down pretty quick. and it automatically starts charging. I bought a thing at the store the other day that you rest your laptop on and it tilts towards you. Its a little metal stand thing, but its like mesh looking with all the holes in it. It stops it from overheating since the battery has room to cool.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 1525 in April 2008. About 1 month ago I noticed that my computer would automatically shut down when the power cord was removed, I hovered over the battery icon in the bottom right corner and it said 0% available plugged in, not charging. I Googled the phrase plugged in, not charging and realised lots of people were having the same problem. I have tried • restarting and shutting down my computer (with and without battery and with and without power cord) • removing and replacing my battery (while laptop is on and off) • a replacement battery from Dell • my sister's battery and power cord (she also has a 1525)in my laptop and get the message plugged in, not charging. My battery in her laptop will charge but my power cord in her laptop says plugged in, not charging • removing the battery with the laptop on then restarting the laptop and replacing the battery • uninstalling and reinstalling the Power Management Software • switching between power plans • flashing with current bios All 3 batteries (hers, my original and my replacement) have adequate charge (50% or higher) I run with Windows Vista Home Basic edition I have been to the local Dell distributer and they tell me to call Dell. I have tried calling Dell but I keep getting put on hold for 30+ minutes. I tried to Chat online with a Dell representative but keep getting the message All chat representatives are currently busy assisting other customers or the queue is closed. Inspiron Chat is available Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM IST. I have send Dell 2 emails. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I just had a phone call from the Dell Online Techician. He said to; Shut Down the laptop. Press the power button then tap the F2 key until a blue screen appears. On the left sided menu arrow down to Battery Info. On the right side of the screen my computer showed • Battery Status = idol • Battery % Charged = 99% • AC Adaptor = Unknown Device Installed He then told me that he's have to post me a new ac adaptor, so fingers crossed that this will solve my problem!

I encountered the same 'plugged in, not charging' with a cheaper replacement adapter after my original Dell adapter (costs 75$) stopped working. After much battery freezing, unplugging, shutting down and restarting, the solution that worked for me was downgrading my bios version from A06 to A03. The only minus is the older bios has poorer power management, but at least I can use my laptop with freedom, instead of being chained to a desktop.

Moral of the story: It's the bios, not the operating system that allows or disallows charging, at least for Dell laptops ( I checked by booting into linux, which had the same issue )

Hello all, I have a HP Pavilion dv4...had this same problem...Fixed by removing battery and plug, replacing battery, replacing plug...leaving alone for 5 minutes, then started. Battery was showing 4% (not charging) but is now indicating 100%...Leads me to think it was fully charged all along but there was a problem reading the correct charge from the battery. Could be it wasn't charging because it COULDN'T charge anymore, but whatever is responsible for reading the power left in the battery was having an issue and was misreporting. This would cause a shutdown if the driver or whatever "thought" the battery was low enough, even if it had plenty of power. Very frustrating, my sympathy to u guys still fighting it. Best of luck!

Ok, so here is what I did, based on a comment I saw earlier here. Mine is a dell, btw. A user here said that he/she updated the A09 BIOS driver for his/her HP, from the HP site. So, I went to the Dell site, and tried finding the latest BIOS update, and finally downloaded and installed it. It flashes your BIOS once you run the setup (it doesn't cause any problem; just consider it as upgrading from XP to Vista). Once you do that, your BIOS should be updated. My battery started working this way, but other solutions mentioned here such as unplugging-plugging, removing the battery and fitting it in again, changing the Adapter are perfectly good solutions too. Everyone might have a different problem, so try everything, and one of these has to work. Usually, as I saw, the BIOS updates begin with the letter A followed by numbers. Good luck!

Think about the basic design of a battery, it is a collection of particles that move rapidly to generate energy. The fast the particles move, the more energy (and heat) is created. Once they hit a certain amount, they are expending energy at a 100% rate and not taking in energy. When these particles are allowed to slow down (shutting laptop down and removing battery) they are no longer required to create enegy. This allows them to slow and retain energy instead of expending it. To dumb it down a little, the when a battery is extremely hot, it cannot charge. Unplug it, let if cool down and it will charge as normal.

Not true. A cold start after a night of non-use and my computer says plugged in, not charging. Also, sometimes after running a while, if I keep unplugging and plugging in my AC adaptor, it suddenly starts charging normally (for a good stretch of time anyway). Clearly, it's warmer after it's been running a while, and yet, that's when it starts charging.

PS. I've tried every fix on this page short of replacing parts (because every time I have them worked on, the technicians say nothing's wrong), and nothing is permanent. I'll post again on every thread I can find if I ever find the solution.

Unplug the power adapter, select Power Saver, replug the Power adapater. It will show "plugged in, charging". You can then change back to Balanced and it will work.

Overall disappointing - it should kick in charging the moment it is replugged in, without all this garbage.

Stupid Vista... or whatever it is giving me this problem... this started two months after I got my brand new laptop. It disappeared for 6 months and now just came back. I have no clue what this is all about.

I had the same problem with my toshiba satellite pro Think part of the problem is with the Vista OS

This is what i did to solve the problem

    1. Plug out the AC Adapter 2. Switch the Power option mode to Power Saver 3. Plug back in the AC Adapter

Only annoying bit is the laptop is very slow when its in the power saver mode.

    Hope that helps someone.

As i said mine is a Toshiba laptop not sure if this will work for other laptop brands.

Hope Microsoft comes up with a patch for this one.

I am a PC Tech and am working on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 laptop. I thought it was the DC jack. DC jack is fine. I've read several blogs that seem to point to a hardware problem (motherboard) causing the issue.

I experience intermittent charging ability. The AC light at times refuses to acknowledge the presence of AC power. I'm starting to believe it is Vista causing the issue.

With the battery removed the laptop will power off. Maybe a thermal issue not sure yet.

With the AC light on battery "not charging" the laptop will run until the battery is dead, resulting in a hard power off. Laptop will run with the battery removed, but it also will suddenly power off...making me think it is a thermal/heat issue.

At any rate, uninstalling the acpi compliant control method battery and searching for hardware changes is working right now...but i'm not holding my breath unless the thing works for a few days.

Thanks for the info it was right on target.

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.

    1.

Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .

    2.

    Expand the Batteries category.

    3.

Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .

WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

    4.

On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .

Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.

Brand new HP compaq 2230s (Windows Vista Business Edition), battery out of package has no charge, adapter when plugged in says,'Plugged In, Not Charging'. If you unplugg adapter from laptop, it immediately turns off, proving no charge in brand new battery and that adapter was not charging it. Searching HP website said it had to do with the charging algorithm, charge trickles into battery for 1/2 hr before power led displays active charging. Unfortunately this is bullsh*t since even half an hour status quo maintained. Besides who wants to wait 1/2 hr every time you want to charge a battery from zero :s, if I find something useful, I shall post.

And for those users who purchase Dell when building your own system and it comes to upgrading your AC Adapter, Do it otherwise buying a separate one will cost you more than a ten dollar upgrade.

Mine is stuck at 9% with this scenario. Problem is, I use a Dell XPS 1530 and I have no clue how to remove the battery! I'd have to apparently unscrew a lot of stuff. I'm worrried about doing that. :(

Any tips? Any other solutions besides actually removing it?

    Thanks.

I have the same problem, so I think I found an answer. It is the recepticle into which the AC plug goes into the laptop. I was wiggling it around a little today as the problem showed up. Have that little thing checked. All other answeres that I have read are not actually fixing the problem. So, I think it is just a faulty recepicle into which the AC plugs.

Hi everyone ! I got the same issue, and this is what i did to get battery charge back. 1. Unplugged AC cord, and drain out battery until you can’t boot system no more. 2. Take out battery, and put it in cooler, NOT FREEZER. Please !!!

Then 3 hours later, put battery and plus in. WOOOOORRRRRKKKKKKS ! It’s Works . Yahooooooo! Any question to ask, please email me at davidtran9178@gmail.com Help community, help yourself.

Out of warranty Toshiba A200. So far I have: > update BIOS to current version > replaced the battery > replaced the power adapter > uninstalled ACPI battery driver > every combination of plugging/unplugging/rebooting > virus and spybot scans > ensured all Vista updates are installed > reset the BIOS to default

Downloaded and running the Google Spyware Doctor software, which found a bunch of stuff that Spybot didn't find. Fingers crossed that this fixes it, however unlikely, because now I am out of options.

I just wanted to chime in that I agree with your comment. I am a web designer and computer tech and some of the above mentioned "fixes" are just silly and make me laugh. I just want to add some thoughts about this issue since I have encountered this too.

First of all silly tricks are not solutions so people please stop spreading "fixes" that are based on magic, like taking out the battery and putting it in the freezer. Do you realize that extreme cold and extreme hot are not good for your computer or battery. In the manual there is even a warning that says: expose to either hot or cold are BAD, so don't do it. In addition these silly "tricks" are pointless because they are tricks and not REAL fixes. No amount of clever trickery is going to fix a BIOS issue or a bug that hasn't been addressed by your computer manufacture or microsoft. For example, this issue, was fixed on my Dell Inspiron 1526 by downloading and installing the most updated version of the BIOS. On the other hand if you go to your manufacturers website or call and complain about it and they can't fix it, its because they are either 1) working on it, or 2) can't tell you how to fix it because they don't know its an issue yet. Unfortunately when a fix is available its because they waited to hear thousands upon thousands of complaints before they invest time, energy, and money into fixing it. Also keep in mind that Vista is still in its infancy. While it is over a year old lets not forget how long it took XP to become bearable, and dare I say it "good". So a good rule with Vista is to UPDATE constantly, if you see that you need an update, download it. Don't wait. Also if your computer came with a update tool from the manufacturer use that too, and use if often.

Ok so I am blue in the face now from this "take care of your computer" lecture. I also want to add that yes if your AC adapter breaks, or has loose wires that needs to be replaced. If that fixes your issue then great. AC Adapters can and will stop working correctly.

    1. Check for BIOS updates 2. Make sure Vista is updated 3. Make sure your adapter is good, if not get a working one

Let me leave you with a profound statement that my grandfather told me when I was a child, "Son, if its man made, its subject to failure at any time."

Hope this all helps, and don't hate Vista or Bill, or your manufacturer, don't hate anyone. Just remember its a computer, its not better than you....lol. Ok, yes you can hate Vista and Bill for screwing up another opportunity to make a good OS.

Oh for all the other computer geeks, "Open it in Notepad, notepad will open anything!" Hope that helps.

    Thanks, and take care

There is a very simple diagnosis to your problem. If the computer is not charging the battery when its shutdown/powered of completely and plugged in its not Vista its the power supply, BIOS or the motherboard. If it does charge when shutdown and plugged in and does not when turned on its Vista.

I haven't read every comment, so if this has been clarified please excuse me: Not every one here the same problem. Its very possible if your computer will charge while its turned off, but not when its running it could be a BIOS/software issue. Mine does not charge AT ALL, which obviously makes it a hardware issue. If you search you will find this is one of the most common issues that HP and Toshiba laptops have. Second to OVERHEATING. Most of you need to find a professional repair shop (not best buy, a real repair shop) and hope that its just a problem with the power jack or a diode, not a chip or fried board. Regardless, if you think that its a "Vista problem", I'd be willing to bet that you won't be able to take apart your computer and fix it yourself. All these little tricks WILL NOT work, they are temporary fixes...you should just go to a professional before you cause more damage trying to plug and unplug to fix your "Vista problem".

You need to remove the battery temporarily for a few minutes and when you return it to the laptop it should continue to show the correct battery power. If it doesn't consider taking it back to the shop as there is likely a fault there. Chloe van

This is definitely a vista (or a driver) issue, since there are at least three to four types of laptops that have this problem, mine included. Mine's a semi custom-made one from cyberpowerpc.com. I fixed my problem by unplugging the ac adapter, reinstalling the battery driver, then plugging it back in.

    Hello,

PROBLEM I HAD My Dell 1525 crashed and I had to re-boot the system. Once I had re-installed everything it appeared that there was an issue with Vista recognising my Dell charger. The message that I was getting was that it was "plugged in - Not Charging".

My Dell is quite new and was quite confident that there was no issue with the battery nor the charger and this was an issue with the system software wither from Vista or Dell.

SOLUTION I found this forum and saw lots of people with the same issues. Mostly the solution was to flash the BIOS or buy a new battery and I wanted to do neither.

I went to dell.com to their downloads section for my model Dell (1525 inspiron). I then downloaded under utilities - Dell recommended Power Management Settings Vista) and this fixed the problem immediately. My laptop now not only recognises the charger but now reads the correct battery level no problems.

If you have another brand then go to that brands webpage and I am sure they all have a similar software that is required so your system can recognise the battery.
